Meridia Diet Pill Lawsuit

"Meridia (sibutramine) Recalled Due to Evidence of Dangerous Heart Risks"

October 8, 2010

Abbott Laboratories and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a voluntary recall of the diet drug Meridia (sibutramine), Oct. 8, 2010. The obesity drug was recalled because it put people at risk of suffering severe and potentially fatal heart risks, including heart attack and stroke.

The Meridia recall advises physicians to stop prescribing the diet drug. Patients are advised to terminate use and talk to their doctors about another weight loss program. The heart problems could lead to death.

A study involving Meridia was conducted to determine the potential risks. Sibutramine Cardiovascular Outcomes Trial (SCOUT) suggests a 16 percent increase in the risk of heart attack, stroke, resuscitation following a stopped heartbeat and death. The study showed only a small difference in weight loss between participants who took Meridia and those who were given a placebo.

Public Citizen has been petitioning the FDA for a Meridia recall for some time now. The first petition was sent on March 19, 2002. Public Citizen re-petitioned the FDA to ban to the diet drug last year.

If you or someone you love has suffered a heart problem and has a history of taking Meridia, you may be eligible to seek and recover compensation. For more information, contact a Meridia weight loss pill lawyer today. We provide free case evaluations.
